Carly Booth reckons a “fun event” also involving two winning Ryder Cup captains as well as a top Premier League footballer is the perfect way to come out of golfing lockdown, writes Martin
Dempster.

The three-time Ladies European Tour winner is joining a star-studded cast for the Paddy Power Golf Shootout, which is being held behind closed doors today at the Centurion Club in Hertfordshire.

Booth is flying the flag for the pros along with Tommy Fleetwood, Andrew “Beef” Johnston, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley while the amateur line-up consists of Harry Kane, Peter Crouch, Freddie Flintoff, Jamie Redknapp and Piers Morgan.

Involving a series of skills challenges, including a world record attempt, and a unique shootout, the event is being screened on Paddy Power’s YouTube channel, as well as on Sky Sports News, talkSPORT, and
Twitter.

“It’s a great line-up and I am looking forward to it,” Booth told The Scotsman. “I’ve seen the challenges so it looks like it is going to be a fun day.

“It will be a bit different and, after being out of competition for ages, I wouldn’t want to go straight back into a tournament right now. No pressure with a bit of fun is something we will all look forward to.”

The event is subject to a rigorous, government-approved Covid-19 testing process, with all attendees set to be tested before being permitted entry to the St Albans venue.

“It is going to be a little bit weird with all the social distancing,” added Booth. “I feel like I am going to be a bit awkward as people won’t be high-fiving or anything like that.

“But it will be fun and it’s for a good cause – golf clubs in the UK – so we should have a good day.”

Booth knows most of the others taking part, including Morgan, the Good Morning Britain presenter on ITV.

“I’ve met Piers before,” she said, “and it is certainly interesting that he is playing with people having different views about some of his opinions at the moment.”
