Catriona Matthew leads LPGA Classic in Ontario

Having gone round Grey Silo in 63 shots on Thursday, the North Berwick golfer needed only one more than that in her second round for a 15-under-par total. An eagle at the par-five fifth got her moving and she added two birdies before the turn and three more on the back nine.

Angela Stanford, who shared the first-round lead, managed a four-under-par 67 to reach 12 under and hold second place outright. Anna Nordqvist of Sweden matched Matthew’s seven-under-par round, the best of the day, to move into a five-way tie for third place on 11 under.

American Ryann O’Toole, Spain’s Belen Mozo and South Korean pair Meena Lee and Chella Choi were also four off the lead, with world No.1 Inbee Park a further shot back.

• Defending champion Zach Johnson remained in a share of the lead as the John Deere Classic reached its midway point.

Johnson was joined by fellow Americans Lucas Glover and Patrick Reed on 12 under par after two rounds following a five-under-par 66, his ninth straight bogey-free at Deere Run to set a new record for the Illinois course.

Reed and Glover had been well back from the overnight lead shared by Johnson and Camilo Villegas but surged through the field with stunning low rounds.

Reed had seven birdies, an eagle and just one dropped shot in an eight-under 63 while Glover went one better, birdying half the holes in an unblemished 62.

The John Deere Classic offers a qualifying place for the Open for the highest placed player not already qualified.

• American Michael Allen seized control of the US Senior Open in commanding fashion, eagling the par-five 14th on the way to a record five-shot lead after the second round at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska.

Allen fired a dazzling seven-under-par 63 to break clear of a congested leaderboard with a ten-under total of 130.

Rocco Mediate, who lost a playoff to Tiger Woods for the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines, was alone in second after carding a 67, with fellow American Jeff Sluman (also 67) a further stroke back at four under.

Colin Montgomerie, playing in his second event since joining the seniors circuit, shot a 73 to go with his first round 69 to leave him 12 shots off the lead with a two-round total of 142.
