Bob MacIntyre confirmed for WGC in Memphis after anxious wait

Bob MacIntyre is facing an anxious wait to find out if he is definitely in the field for the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational in Memphis

After an anxious wait, Scottish No 1 Bob MacIntyre is definitely playing in this week's World Golf Championship event in Memphis.

The 23-year-old had initially looked set to miss out on the FedEx St Jude Invitational, which starts at TPC Southwind on Thursday.

He then got into the elite field following Friday's announcement by Tiger Woods that he is sitting out the $10.5 million tournament, but had to wait until this morning for final confirmation.

A spot was being held for the winner of this week's PGA Tour event, the 3M Open in Minnesota, which went to American Michael Thompson.

Another spanner in the works would have been someone moving into the world's top 50 on the back of that event and automatically securing a spot in the WGC.

But that didn't happen, so it's all systems go for MacIntyre, who skipped last week's Betfred British Masters at Close House due to the fact he had to undergo a 14-day quarantine in the US to play in next week's US PGA Championship in San Francisco.

"Following all the weekend's tournaments and the updated OWGR, we are delighted to confirm @robert1lefty is last man in to @WGCFedEx," tweeted his management company, Bounce Sports, this morning.

"He will also play @PGAChampionship the following week....14 days of quarantining suddenly seems worthwhile."

Last year's European Tour Rookie of the Year had been hoping to warm up for the season's opening major by getting an invitation for the Barracuda Championship, an event in California being staged concurrently with the FedEx St Jude Invitational.

But his first appearance since the Qatar Masters will now be on one of the biggest stages in golf, having already played in two WGCs.
