Golf: Winter League rivals savour away days

CARRICKVALE and Silverknowes are still locked together in the Edinburgh Municipal Clubs Winter League after coming out of cold storage to win their first matches of 2012.

Both victories came on the road, with Carrickvale returning to the scene of their historic Dispatch Trophy treble to beat Braids United and Silverknowes seeing off a stuffy Portobello side.

According to team manager George Alexander, Carrickvale had a “very tight game” up at the Braids and he felt his side were a touch fortunate to emerge with a 2…-1… success.

Silverknowes won 3…-… but that was also alot tighter than the scores suggests on a Portobello course described by the visiting Keith Reilly as being in “great condition”.

The latest results mean that Carrickvale and Silverknowes are both sitting on the six-point mark after three games.

And the banter between the two sides had already started ahead of a forthcoming top-of-the-table clash.

“We are ready – bring it on,” said Silverknowes star Tam Caldwell.

Carrickvale’s David Ewen replied: “I can’t remember the last time they beat us at Silverknowes. Granted they cuffed us at The Braids but we were a star player down.”

In the other group, Lochend made the most of home advantage to open their acccount with a 2…-1… win over Edinburgh Western. But Harrison are still in pole position in that section after winning their first two games.
