Golf: Watton makes Tenby cut and could yet get cap call

MORTONHALL'S young star Rachael Watton and Craigielaw's Jane Turner did very well in atrocious weather to get past the halfway cut in the British women's open amateur stroke play championship at Tenby on the exposed South Wales coastline.

In fact, if the Scotland selectors have not yet finalised their team of eight for the women's home internationals at Whitchurch GC, Cardiff from 8-10 September, Rachael might still force herself into last-gasp contention.

She had a second-round 75 - seven shots better than her opening 82 - in a downpour to beat the 159 cut with ease on the 157 mark. Now lying joint 23rd and with joint leader Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) the only Scot ahead of her with two rounds to go, Watton's claims for a first cap would be hard to ignore if she could make the top ten or 15 by the close of play tonight.

Jane Turner also played better in the stormy conditions than she did in Friday's slightly windy weather, improving by three shots for a 77 to be on the same 157 mark as her Lothians colleague.

If anything can be certain in women's golf team selections, Turner is a banker to keep her place in the team for the Home Internationals.

The only other Scot to make the last day is former national champion Megan Briggs of Kilmacolm with an 81.
