Golf: Watson stars for Stanford

LOTHIANS star Sally Watson produced a polished performance to help Stanford University win a prestigious college event over their home course.

The freshman shot a 36-hole total of 144 with rounds of 73 and 71 to earn a share of the individual title in the Peg Barnard Invitational championship.

Watson's contribution saw Stanford finish with a team total of 596 for the 36-hole event, giving them a one-shot win over California, followed by Oregon (607) and Washington (609).

It was Stanford's third straight Peg Barnard title after claiming championships in 2007 and 2008 (there was no tournament last season).

After shooting a two over 37 on the front due – she had a double bogey at the sixth, Watson carded a 34 on the back nine, registering back-to-back birdies on the 473-yard par 5 12th hole and on the 386-yard, par 4 13th hole.

"I'm really proud of the way our team finished today," said Stanford head coach Caroline O'Connor. "We got out of the blocks a little slowly but we waited patiently for our chances and made the most of our opportunities.

"Basically, it comes down to two strokes per play and we were good for it today. It's a great start to the spring."
