Golf: Uni glory for Edinburgh ace Susan

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY student Susan Jackson held off a last-day charge from Penicuik's Jane Turner to win the Scottish Universities' Championship at Moray.

Turner, a Craigielaw member but representing Robert Gordon University in the Lossiemouth event, stormed into the lead after the third round, leapfrogging Jackson with a 75 against the overnight leader's 79.

But her hopes of adding the Scottish title to her back-to-back British Universities' Championship wins were thwarted in the final round.

Jackson responded to the challenge with a closing 68 for a total of 287, pipping Turner (70) by a single shot in a thrilling battle for the crown.

The men's title went to Stirling's James White, who reaped the benefits of being part of the Scotland squad that spent eight weeks in South Africa recently.

Joint-sixth at the halfway stage, the Fifer closed with two four-under-par 68s to claim the title with a seven-under-par total of 277.

He won by three shots from team-mate and overnight leader Bobby Rushford (71 74), with Colin Thomson making it a 1-2-3 for Stirling on 281.

Heriot-Watt's Steven Smith closed with rounds of 71 and 73 to finish in a tie for fifth on 287, with former Lothians champion Zander Culverwell down in 15th after he signed off with scores of 69 and 74 for 293.
