Golf: Torrance to be honoured in Glasgow

IN the year he’s celebrating two significant anniversaries – it’s 40 years since his first professional triumph and 10 years since he led Europe to victory in the Ryder Cup at The Belfry – Sam Torrance is to be honoured in his home country.

The 58-year-old will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2012 Annodata Scottish Golf Awards in Glasgow next month, a year after Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie received the same accolade. “I am privileged to be receiving this award and thoroughly looking forward to the evening,” said Torrance, who is set to be joined at the event by members of his family, including father and lifelong coach, Bob.

“I have enjoyed a wonderful career and I would like to think I am not finished yet. I have many great memories and I look forward to sharing them with Scotland’s golf fans on the night. This will be another memorable occasion for me.”

Torrance will be joined at the event by Alison Nicholas, who led Europe to a dramatic Solheim Cup victory in Ireland last year. She’s taking that trophy along on the night to be displayed along with the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup and the Claret Jug.
