Golf: Tiger Woods draws closer in Dubai

TIGER WOODS moved up into the top ten on his return to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic today - as Lee Westwood moved into a tie for third.

Resuming on one under par following his closing eagle yesterday, Woods birdied the 12th, 13th and 18th to reach the turn in a three-under 34.

Westwood, meanwhile, birdied the two par fives on the back nine and on five under was only two behind overnight leader Rory McIlroy, one of the second round's later starters.

McIlroy, meanwhile, had been joined on seven under by South African Thomas Aiken, who birdied the tenth and 15th and had still to card a bogey after 24 holes this week.

Meanwhile, Swanston New's John Gallagher finished in a tie for seventh in the El Valle Open, an event on the Hi5 Tour in Spain. The former Scottish amateur champion closed with a 68 for a seven-under total of 206, four behind winner Florian Fritsch from Germany.

In Australia, Musselburgh's Vikki Laing and Lynn Kenny of Archerfield Links have both missed the cut in the ANZ Ladies' Masters. Laing shot a second successive 74 in Queensland today, with Kenny finishing a shot behind her compatriot after a second-round 73.
