Golf: Sunday best for the Glen in League

THE Glen moved three points clear at the top of the First Division in the East Lothian Winter Golf League after drawing at Haddington as a full set of fixtures took place on Sunday.

Keith Nicholson led the way for the hosts and faced the experienced pairing of Gary Reid and Jim Jack. There was a sense of dj vu in this tie, Nicholson having finished all square against the same pair when these teams met in October.

His partner this time round was Law Hardie, a former Glen player, and the result was another halved game.

The result kept the North Berwick club's unbeaten record intact while leaving Haddington at the foot of the table.

In what is shaping up to be a good campaign for North Berwick clubs, North Berwick and Tantallon are level on points at the top of the Second Division.

Tantallon won well at Gifford in their latest outing, Stuart O'Connell's team closing in on North Berwick in the process.

At the west end of the county, Thorntree couldn't quite do enough to prevent a solid-looking Musselburgh side from taking the points.

Alex Chisholm's side have a couple of games in hand and could yet mount a serious promotion challenge. Next up for Musselburgh, though, is a difficult trip to Tantallon on Sunday, when North Berwick travel to third- placed Kilspindie in a week where something has to give in the promotion race.

Back in the top flight, Royal Musselburgh lifted themselves off the bottom with a second win this term over Longniddry.
