Golf: Shaun's show secures lead

CRAIGIELAW'S Shaun McAllister produced the best round of his short professional career so far to earn a share of the lead after the opening day of the Pandora 2010 Open, a PGA EuroPro Tour event, at Burhill in Surrey, writes MARTIN DEMPSTER.

The former Scottish Boys' Stroke-play champion shot a four-under-par 68 to set the pace along with Graham Benson, Sean Doherty, Martin Sell and Tim Dykes.

McAllister, who turned professional after earning his card for last season's PGA EuroPro Tour, was the early leader, carding three birdies in his opening four holes on the back nine before going through the turn at three under after a bogey at the 15th was followed by a fourth birdie at the 18th.

His fifth birdie of the day came at the first to move him to four under, where he finished after back-to-back birdies at the fourth and fifth were sandwiched between two dropped shots.

Elliot Saltman is four off the lead after a 70, two fewer than younger brother Zack and fellow Archerfield Links player, Lee Harper. John Gallagher is a shot further back, while Mark Kerr had a 77.
