Golf: Oldcorn cards top-ten finish

ANDREW OLDCORN maintained his excellent start to life on the seniors circuit as he staged a strong finish to secure a top-ten spot in The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open at Royal Porthcawl.

The Kings Acre man shot a closing 69, two-under-par, for a 54-hole total of 213 – five behind the winner, John Bland of South Africa.

Oldcorn finished in joint-seventh place, just behind fellow Scot Gordon Brand Jnr and just ahead of John Chillas.

Bland carded a one-under 71 in the final round, seeing off Paraguayan Angel Franco in dramatic fashion.

The pair were neck and neck at eight under after 16 holes, but Franco, three groups ahead of Bland, bogeyed the 18th and then the South African birdied the par-5 17th to give himself some breathing space coming up the last.

Former Musselburgh professional Fraser Mann closed with a 70 to finish on 223.
