Golf: Matthew's 75 trails teenage star Booth

North Berwick's Catriona Matthew had to make do with a 75 as 18-year-old Carly Booth led the Scottish challenge on 69 after the first round of the AIB Ladies' Irish Open at Killeen Castle near Dublin.

Booth, from Perthshire, had an eagle at the long 12th to finish in joint third place and just two strokes behind the leader, Maria Hjorth. Sweden's Solheim Cup was one shot ahead of England's Melissa Reid.

Krystle Caithness was the next best of the Scots on 73, while Musselburgh's Vikki Laing and rookie Kylie Walker both shot matching rounds of 74.

Matthew missed the cut as defending champion in last week's Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale, and she made a faltering start in Ireland with bogeys at her opening two holes.

She dropped further shots at the ninth and 11th before finally making a birdie at the 15th.

Glasgow's Janice Moodie, the Scottish No. 2 behind Matthew, also had a disappointing day.

Despite being the only Scot to have made the cut at Birkdale, she opened with 78.
