Golf: Matthew targets challenge to leader Masson at Carnoustie

North BERWICK'S Catriona Matthew reached the halfway stage of the Ricoh Women's British Open at Carnoustie as the leading British player and still bang in contention after a six-birdie second-round 69.

At just six shots behind the leader, Germany's Caroline Masson, the crowd favourite was poised for a weekend strike and harboured hopes of repeating her glorious win at Royal Lytham and St Annes two years ago. Matthew attracted the biggest gallery on a day when Carnoustie discarded its 'Carnasty' reputation. Conditions couldn't have been more sublime with hardly a breeze disturbing a day of glorious sunshine.

"I love this weather," said Matthew. "A lot of the players are hoping for wind and rain because they think that's what it should be like at a British Open. But I've had enough of playing in bad stuff in Scotland.

"My round was good and kept me well in contention. There are still two rounds to play and five shots is nothing over this course, no matter if it is sun or storms."

Masson was in the last group out and shot a flawless seven-birdie 65 to take a one-stroke lead over two South Koreans, Inbee Park (64) and first-round leader, Meena Lee (69).

Glasgow's Janice Moodie, who had a second son, Matt, in March, also hit the birdie trail with a great 67 to move to two under par, while Kylie Walker, who pays out of The Carrick, had a second successive 72 to make the cut. But Bothwell Castle amateur Pamela Pretswell missed out by a stroke. She dropped three late shots for a 74 and two over par.

Masson admitted she was surprised by her surge to the top. "This feels awesome," said the 22-year-old, after finishing around 8.15pm. "It is unbelievable. I didn't expect to lead. But I have had two great days. But I always enjoy the British Open and links golf.

"I have never played Carnousite before, but I have seen it a lot on TV. I loved it."
