Golf: Lothian duo await cap calls

The Scotland team for the women's home internationals at Whitchurch Golf Club, Cardiff from September 8 to 10 will be announced by the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association on Monday.

It is likely to include two Lothians players - Jane Turner (Craigielaw) and Mortonhall's Rachael Watton - even though, bizarrely, they both ran up 10s in their final rounds at the weather-shortened British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Tenby Golf Club on the South Wale coastline.

Turner and Rachael both finished with 87s in none-too-easy conditions - a thunder and lightning storm halted play at 9am and it was not resumed until 11.30am - and they both totalled 244, 26 shots behind Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), the fourth Scottish winner of the title over the past seven years.

Jane had her 10 at the par-4 fourth and contributed to an outward half of 50 - her highest nine-hole score since she was learning to play the game. Rachael had her 10 at the par-5 eighth and she reached the turn in 47.

Turner has won the Riccarton Rosebowl 36-hole open at Hamilton since she lost in the semi-finals of the Scottish women's championship at Craigielaw. Watton reached the quarter-finals with an impressive run in the national championship. That should stand both in good stead with the selection committee.
