Golf: Local golfers in the hunt

LOTHIANS players were still in the hunt for seniors success at two different venues in Scotland.

Going into the final round of the Scottish Men's Senior Open Amateur Championship at Pollok, Lindsay Gordon of Turnhouse was leading the local challenge.

A second-round 74 in Glasgow's southside put him on 145, just three shots behind the joint-leaders, Scott Macdonald from Dunfermline and Berwick-upon-Tweed's Dave Millar.

Macdonald, the former Walker Cup man who is also a member at Royal Burgess, shot 72 in his second round, as did Millar. Another Royal Burgess player, Ian Taylor, and Murrayfield's Derek Miller, were also still in with a chance of claiming the title going into the final circuit. They were both on 146, Taylor having followed his opening 70 with a 76 while Miller posted a 74 to add to his 72.

Scottish seniors international John Fraser, another Royal Burgess man, missed the cut, as did Gordon's clubmate, Alastair Taylor, and Dunbar's Wilson Morton.

Meanwhile, up at Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Moira Thomson of Gullane Ladies is through to the semi-finals in the Scottish Senior Women's Amateur Match-play Championship.

She rallied from three down after six holes to beat Cruden Bay's Jill Harrison at the 19th in yesterday's quarter-finals and was taking on St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries (St Rule) in this morning's semi-finals.

Baberton pair Pamela Williamson and Fiona Hunter both won their first-round matches on the Black Isle course before losing in the afternoon quarter-finals.

Hunter, who had squeezed through on the last against Dunbar's Noreen Fenton, lost by two holes to title favourite Heather Anderson of Alyth, while Williamson gave a good account of herself before succumbing on the 18th to Fifer Lorna Bennett.
