Golf: Liberton ladies' success

LIBERTON'S ladies have chalked up the latest success in a purple patch for the club.

Hot on the heels of their juniors making their mark, a team of Fiona Hume, Pat Stables, Jill McLean and Anne White won the Morrison Millar Trophy at The Merchants, beating 31 other teams representing a total of 19 Edinburgh clubs.

The Liberton A quartet posted a net total of 276 in the double foursomes event, winning by four shots from a Murrayfield A team made up of Finngerd Clark, Celia Nixon, Margaret Ferguson and Rosie Denis.

Torphin Hill's Ellen Clarke, Fiona Ford, Lisa Campbell and Lesley Campbell were third on 283, a shot ahead of Ratho Park's representatives, Judy Buchan, Amanda Liddell, Caroline Mansley and Iris O'Neil.

It was also a day to remember for Broomieknowe's Kate McIntosh, who had helped Midlothian retain the East Women's Inter-County title at Royal Musselburgh earlier in the week.

She achieved her first hole-in-one at the 133-yard 11th, the ace helping Kate and her mother Caroline win the Dormie Salver, for the best scratch score, with a two-round total of 158.

Baberton's Kate Johnston and Fiona McLaren had the best 36-hole net, 139, outwith the team prizes, pipping both Pat Wood and Isla McCrone from Turnhouse and Murrayfield's Hazel Peplinski and Denise Mitchell by a shot.
