Golf: Liberton Juniors retain Summer title

LIBERTON are the Edinburgh Junior Summer League champions - 12 months after claiming the title for the first time.

They beat Turnhouse 4-2 at Mortonhall to hang on to the crown but were made to fight for it against opponents who had beaten Baberton in their semi-final. Fielding five out of the seven players who recorded the historic win last year, Liberton were given a flying start by Scotland Under-16 cap Anthony Blaney as he beat Lewis Bain 6 and 4.

Ross Munro and Scott Finlay then turned round their matches late on to both win one up while Daniel Eardley also added to Liberton's tally with a fine 4 and 3 win over Aordan Donnelly.

Thomas Brock continued his remarkable record of not losing a Summer League match for two seasons by winning the 18th to half his match with Leigh Lawson.

But Turnhouse were anything but pushovers, as wins from Callum Greenhill, who beat Fraser Christie by one hole, and Euan Wilson, who defeated Liam Corrigan 3 and 2, proved.

"A very tight match played over a very difficult Mortonhall, where the greens in particular are to be commended," said Liberton junior convenor Robert Ross.

Both teams now move on to the Scottish finals at Macdonald Spey Valley in Aviemore on 4 October.
