Golf: Harburn top individual honours list

HARBURN'S golfers made the most of home advantage to dominate the Midlothian Winter League Individual Championship.

Michael Burnett claimed the top scratch prize, the Keith Goodwin Memorial Trophy, with a 69, which also helped the hosts take the team honours.

The best four scores counted for that and Burnett was given good backing from runner-up Craig Deerness (70) as well as Craig Galloway (73) and Mike Kirk jun (75).

Glencorse filled the top two spots in the individual handicap event, Ian Melville pipping clubmate Gary Porteous by two shots with his net 68.

In the junior event, a 77 from Newbattle's Greg Thorburn was the best scratch, while Chris Curran of Harburn secured the handicap prize with a 74.

To wrap up the 2010/11 campaign, the Alexander Trophy was presented to Glencorse on winning the League Championship, with Swanston New picking up the Junior Shield.

n? Susan JACKSON, of Edinburgh University, shared the lead heading into the final two rounds of the Scottish Universities' Championship at Moray today. A second round 72 gave her a two-round total of 150, which was matched by Gemma Bradbury, the defending champion from St Andrews.

Chasing the leaders was Lothians star Jane Turner, the Robert Gordon student sitting three shots back after a 73.

In the men's event, Varun Varadharajan, the rising Royal Burgess star who is at Heriot-Watt, moved up to 13th after a 68 in his second round but a second successive 75 left Zander Culverwell, the former Lothians champion, 15 shots behind Stirling team-mate Bobby Rushford.
