Golf: Gordon king of Lothian Senior scene

LINDSAY GORDON, the Turnhouse and Gullane stalwart, pipped playing partner Robert Jack in a ding-dong battle to claim the coveted scratch spoils in the Lothians Seniors' Championship at Haddington.

In an event that had been washed out at Ratho Park 12 months earlier, Gordon dropped four shots in the first seven holes before a first birdie of the day at the eighth took him out in 38.

"I then made a good start back," he said in reference to three straight birdies from the 11th.

He was on in two at the 11th and 13th, both par-5s, and holed from just under 20 feet at the 12th.

Responding to his playing partner's sudden momentum, Liberton legend Jack, who had been out in 36, birdied the 16th to go one ahead before both players made 2s at the penultimate hole.

Jack hit his tee shot there to a couple of feet while Gordon holed from nearly 25 feet to stay within touching distance.

At the last, Jack was bunkered and had to splash out, eventually signing for a six, while Gordon had a five, all of which meant they were both round in 71, with Gordon coming out on top in a card countback thanks to an inward half of 33 against 35. The Bobby Lees Trophy win saw Gordon, a 14-time club champion at Turnhouse and eight-time winner at Gullane, complete a Lothians double.

"I won the Junior Championship a long time ago and the only thing missing is the middle one (the Lothians Championship]," said the 59-year-old. "I got to the semi-finals in that one year before losing in the final to Iain Stavert the following year (1977]."

Gordon, who, like Jack, plays off one, was still in with an outside chance of winning in last week's Scottish Seniors' Championship at Pollok on the southside of Glasgow.

"I dropped five shots in three holes around the turn and fell away as a result of that," he added. The Busitron Trophy, for best net and the overall prize, was won by West Linton's John Mackie with a 68 off 11, a score that also saw him top the B section, for 63-67 year-olds.

Gordon won the A section, 55-62, with his net 70, while Tantallon's Harvey Butterworth won the C section, the 68 and overs, with a 71 off 17, claiming that prize courtesy of a better inward half.
