Golf: Final 10ft putt keeps Liberton top

LIBERTON golf club maintained a one-point advantage in the South East Edinburgh Winter League after sharing the spoils in a top-of-the-table clash at Prestonfield.

With the first and last matches being fairly one-sided, it came down to a nail-biting couple of putts at the last hole in match three. Liberton’s Scott Finlay and Ian Neilson were one up against Gordon Mackenzie and Lewis Blyth but needed to hole a ten-footer to clinch the point after their opponents had turned up the heat by sticking their approach to half that distance.

It means Liberton hold on to the top position with two rounds to play as the league heads for the Christmas shutdown.

Duddingston secured their first victory of the campaign with a 3-1 home win against Craigmillar Park, who took three of matches the full distance.

In the Junior League, Liberton also occupy top spot, though only on ‘goal’ difference over Duddingston. Previously unbeaten, Duddingston lost at home to Craigmillar Park, for whom Ronan Rafferty and Emma Morrison won at the last to decide the match.
