Golf: Fairburn is the one to beat as Juniors tackle the Braids

SIMON FAIRBURN, the defending champion, heads the field for tomorrow's Lothians Junior Championship qualifying at the Braids.

And he'll be the player to beat once again based on his performance in the Scottish Youths' Championship earlier this year.

Fairburn, whose home club is Torwoodlee but is entered for the Lothians event out of Craigielaw, closed with a 69 at Monifieth to claim the silver medal.

Twelve months ago Fairburn produced a polised performance over the Capital course to add his name to the likes of Andrew Oldcorn, Ian Young and David Inglis on the Spiers Trophy.

But no player in recent years has managed to win the event two years in a row. And the likes of Anthony Blaney (Liberton), Euan Bowden (Tantallon), Blair Todd (Greenburn), Euan Patterson (Bruntsfield Links), Euan Mackay (Craigielaw), Chris Low (Tantallon) and Greg Smail (Craigielaw) will all be heading up the Braids with high hopes.

And others such as Cameron Marr (Musselburgh), Fraser Thain (West Linton) and Graeme Duncan (Kingsknowe) will fancy their chances as well.

Craigmillar Park's Willem Kerr could be another player to watch, having boosted his confidence by enjoying a good run in the Scottish Boys' Championship at West Kilbride earlier in the year.
