Golf: East in title pole position

EAST are the new favourites to win the delayed Fife & Lothians Golf Associations Winter League after leapfrogging Mid to take over top spot.

And they did so in style, crushing the leaders 8-2 in Sunday's match between the two sides at Whitekirk.

Mid got off to the best possible start as Duddingston duo Stuart Smith and David Miller took the top two matches, beating Stephen Neilson and Stephen Simants respectively. But East never looked back after winning the third and fourth matches on the 18th green through Keith Nicholson and Dean Muir.

Further victories for the home side followed from Myles Cunningham, Daniel Kay, Ewen Donaldson, Scott Cunningham, Ross Noon and Ben McLeod.

With the scheduled West v Fife match at Silverknowes being called off, this leaves East in a strong position to clinch the title heading into their final encounter.
