Golf: Colinton's effort all in vain as Carrick Knowe canter on

Colinton have known better times in the distant past, so the foot-of-the-table club is rejoicing that they managed to take two points off leaders Carrick Knowe in this week's 10th round of fixtures in the Scotmid-sponsored Water of Leith 1st Sixteen League.

Wins for the home rinks skipped by Gary MacDonald and Brian Davies inflicted damage on the table-toppers but didn't secure the bonus point as Carrick Knowe managed that with a 71-63 aggregate.

That 8-shot superiority tipped the match scales 3-2 in favour of a visiting team that produced winning performances on the rinks skipped by Darren Hush and Richard Tough.

Hush did most to deny Colinton the overall match success as he skipped Andy Beath, Blair Paton and Andy Blair to a handsome 29-14 triumph that included one five and two sixes against Brian McRae, Euan Gibson, John Fisher and David Fisher.

Richard Tough contributed win number two in positive fashion as he led all the way to skip Freddy Carter, Colin Tough and Ian McKenna to a 17-12 success over Ross Byers, John Gibson, Bill Watson and Alan Milne.

Carrick Knowe arrived with hopes of achieving a 5-0 result but Colinton weren't for folding and exceeded expectations by spiking opposition big guns James Hogg and Colin Mitchell.

MacDonald (Gary) served up a strong performance from 9-9 to skip his rink to a 19-9 drubbing of Rab Hush, John Mitchell Craig Aitken, and James Hogg.

Bainfield stormed to a 4-1 home win over Gorgie Mills to move within a fraction of the now under pressure leaders while 4-1 wins for Sighthill (Juniper Green) and Slateford (Balerno) keep both in the picture.
