Golf: Club returns

First for PortyPORTOBELLO High School is organising the inaugural Portobello Schools' Open on Wednesday, 16 June at Craigentinny.

Sponsored by Edinburgh Leisure, the Scottish Golf Centre, the Cruden Group and Portobello Community Council, the event will offer a 100 voucher as the first scratch prize while there will be handicap and team awards as well.

TURNHOUSE trainee James McGhee is the leading Lothians player after the opening three event's on Alan Tait's Xltec Pro Golf Tour.

The former Duddingston amateur is lying 12th on the money-list, just outside one of the ten spots in an end-of-season event to be held in Spain.

Paul McKechnie (13th), Chris Russell (14th), Andrew Oldcorn (15th), John Gallagher (17th) and Shaun McAllister (18th) are also in the top 20, with Banchory's Greig Hutcheon leading the way with winnings of 1,837.

999 call out

PLACES are still available in Deer Park's Mixed Classic on 12 June, when pairs will play 27 holes on the Livingston course and also enjoy some great food that is included in the entry fee of 65 per couple.

Nicknamed the 9-9-9, the event comprises of foursomes, greensomes and a better ball, with dinner and a prize-giving to conclude the day. It's something different and Deer Park are hoping it could become an annual event.

"It represents great value," said general manager John Douglas.

Jane in Spain

CRAIGIELAW'S Jane Turner is off to Malaga, Spain this weekend, to represent Great Britain in the 13th World University Golf Championships.

The Robert Gordon University student, who retained her British Universities' Stroke Play title at Dundonald earlier in the year, is part of a seven-strong side that also includes Scottish Women's champion Kelsey MacDonald and former Scottish Boys' champion James White.
