Golf: Clara Young makes superb start

NORTH BERWICK'S Clara Young has got her season off to a flying start by topping the under-16 girls' table in the SGU Winter Series Order of Merit.

She secured her success by finishing fourth in the final event at Troon Darley, where the rising East Lothian star carded a 78.

After the last of the four events, Young had amassed 687.5 points, enough to push Gullane's Lesley Atkins, last year's overall winner, down into second spot.

Despite winning at Troon Darley, Broomieknowe's Kate McIntosh had to settle for second spot in the over-16 girls' event. She finished with 555 points, but Ailsa Summers of Carnoustie Ladies ran out a worthy winner with 675.

The Glen's Euan Bowden and Alexander Wilson of Gullane both secured top-10 finishes in the under-16 boys' event.

Bowden was seventh on 435, just ahead of his East Lothian compatriot on 415.

Ewan Scott of St Andrews topped that table with 625.
