Golf: Catriona Matthew on form

LOTHIANS star Catriona Matthew maintained her promising start to the season in the opening round of the Kia Classic in California.

The Archerfield ace carded a three-under-par 70 to sit in a tie for fourth, four shots behind leader Amanda Blumnerherst.

Matthew, who had top-tens in the Far East in February, bagged birdies at the fifth, eighth, 11th and 18th, with her only blemish being a dropped shot at the 14th.

She was the leading British player by three shots - Laura Davies was round in level-par - with fellow Scot Mhairi McKay opening with a 75.
