Golf: Campbell still has chance of making Open

The left-hander was among those facing a return to Littlestone today to complete their second rounds following a lightning delay yesterday.

Campbell shot a level-par 71 in his opening round and was lying in a tie for 19th when play was suspended.

He started his first circuit with a birdie but was two-over with two to play before finishing with a brace of birdies.

That left last year's Lothians Champion of Champions runner-up four shots off the pace at the halfway stage. And, with only three spots up for grabs in The Open field at Sandwich in a fortnight's time, he probably needed the round of his life to secure one of them.

James Ross, the other Lothians player in the Littlestone line-up, was one of the players who managed to complete both their rounds.

But, with scores of 71 and 73, the Royal Burgess player already knew he'd missed out.

Ross had a mixed bag of birdies and bogeys, with the par-3 14th proving particularly troublesome as he spilled three shots there over the two rounds.

All the other Lothians players competing at the final qualifying stage for the world's oldest major also missed out.

European Tour player Elliot Saltman came the closest to booking a spot at Sandwich. The Archerfield player shot rounds of 69 and 66 at Rye to just miss out on a play-off by two shots.

Fellow Archerfield man Lee Harper had a first-round 72 at the same venue but withdrew.

Scottish amateur star James Byrne was also among those who failed to qualify at Rye.Bidding to end an agonising run in his bid to play in one of the majors, last year's Amateur Championship finalist was in contention again after an opening 66, but a second-round 69 left him below Saltman in a tie for 13th.

Pumpherston's Paul Drake was among those in action at Prince's, but the former Lothians Order of Merit winner missed out after rounds of 78 and 75.
