Golf: Baberton's winning ladies all set to be feted tonight

BABERTON Golf Club's leading ladies will take a bow tonight in celebration of the success they enjoyed last season at club, county, country and international level.

A special event being held at the Juniper Green club will mark a memorable 2010, which produced the roll of honour on the right.

It's a remarkable tale of success, hence the reason the club's Lady Captain, Fiona Neave, decided to organise tonight's event.

"The ladies' section has been a credit to the club for a long time," said Neave. "They are a close family and friendship bonds. Baberton has supported these ladies which has resulted in their loyalty to the club."

Asked why she felt Baberton had historically done well in women's golf, Neave added: "We have a small core of very good lady golfers who are team players and encourage those less experienced by their behaviour to them.

"They are passionate about the game of golf and have developed an ethos which reaches out to a stage wider than their own personal achievements."

As the club quite rightly reflects on such a successful year, efforts are also being made to try and ensure that a new crop of lady golfers is coming through at Baberton.

But, as Neave admitted, that is proving easier said than done. "Sadly, we are concerned, as are many clubs, by the lack of girls coming through the ranks, though the club in general tries hard to support its younger players - both boys and girls - with an active junior convenor," she noted.

"It is an area that we are seeking to actively encourage."
