Golf: Away-day joy thanks to Millar and Walker takes Gullane to the top in Winter League

GULLANE have moved top of the table in the East Lothian Winter Golf League after an away win against leaders Glen.

Scott Walker and Keith Millar showed the way for the defending champions by taking control of the top match, eventually running out 4 and 3 winners against Gary Reid and Jim Jack.

At the other end of the order, Duncan Low teamed up with Laurie Main to win by a similar margin, just about the same time as Alan Smith and Ross Thomson prevailed on the 17th green in a closer tussle.

In claiming both points, Gullane avenged their home defeat against the same opponents last October and skipper Jeff Aitken must now fancy his chances of retaining the title.

Haddington got the better of Longniddry in a close encounter that saw each of the last three ties go to the 18th green.

In the end, it was former Longniddry players Scott Hardie and Daryll Souness who secured both points for Haddington to lift their new team out of the relegation zone.

Home advantage was also the deciding factor at Prestongrange, where Royal Musselburgh moved ahead of their guests Dunbar courtesy of a 3-2 home win.

In Division 2 Tantallon had little difficulty in dismissing visiting Thorntree to take over at the top.

Kilspindie dropped to second place with a draw on the road at Craigielaw, although this result probably did more to dent the home side's promotion chances than the visitors'.

Narrow defeats on the road meant North Berwick and Whitekirk effectively dropped out of the promotion race, leaving Craigielaw and Musselburgh as the main challengers.

Castle Park dealt out a whitewash to struggling Winterfield but that wasn't enough to lift them off bottom spot due to Musselburgh Old recording their first win at home to North Berwick.
