Golf: Aces are pipped at the Braids invite

FORMER Scottish amateur golf aces John Gallagher and Graham Fox joined the East Alliance regulars in yesterday's invitation greensomes at the Braids.

But the pair were both pipped for top prizes on a day when 92 players took part. The overall winners, picking up the Richardson & Brownlee Salver, were Alliance vice-president Andrew Marshall and his partner, Stuart Mason of Cawder, with a net 64.4.

Fox finished second on 65.6 along with Roy Murray of West Lothian, while Duddingston duo Alastair McLean and Keith Millar were third on 66.6.

Local knowledge paid dividends in the scratch section, which was dominated by two Harrison members.

Mike Robson, who had Dispatch Trophy regular Dougie Waugh of Baberton as his partner, finished first on 66, a shot ahead of clubmate Justin White and Scotland squad member Brian Soutar of Leven. Gallagher, in tandem with old warhorse George Wither of Lothianburn, shared third on 68 along with Allyn Dick and David Ewen.
