Goldie scoops first three places in Cup

Trainer Jim Goldie pulled off a remarkable one-two-three in the William Hill Scottish Cup at Musselburgh yesterday, led by the Lee Newman-ridden course specialist Los Nadis.

The 11-1 winner swept into the lead about a furlong and a half out and kept up the gallop to the line to score by two lengths and five lengths from stable companions Gordonsville and Dazzling Light.

Goldie said: “I have never had the first three in a race before and I wish I had had a bet on them in a tricast! Los Nadis likes it around here and he could go chasing at some stage, but there are some nice hurdle races to go for with him. He is in good form at the moment.”

Linda Perratt brought seven runners to Musselburgh’s meeting and got off to a good start when Royal Straight landed the William Hill Scottish Cup Selling Handicap under a good ride from apprentice Julie Burke.

Burke dashed Royal Straight (11-2) into the lead at the quarter-mile marker and kept him going in good style to pass the post with one and a quarter lengths to spare over Monthly Medal.

Robert Winston received a seven-day whip ban after getting Ian Semple’s Here Now And Why home in a tight finish to the TurfTV Handicap. The 5-1 chance battled on gamely to get the better of Cayman Fox by three-quarters of a length, with Berbice, who had looked to be cantering over his rivals a furlong out, a further head away in third. Winston was found to have used his whip with excessive frequency and will be sidelined on November 9-12 and November 14-16.

Choisan (2-1 favourite) gained a well-deserved first success under a fine front-running ride from David Allan in the British Stallion Studs British Racing EBF Maiden Stakes, while Free Zone, the 9-4 joint-favourite, landed the I’ll Be Good in the Scottish Racing Your Better Bet Nursery.

Paul Hanagan tops the jockeys’ championship with 157 victories but he was winless from his six rides at Musselburgh. Silvestre de Sousa, in contrast, was in double form for a second consecutive day when twice successful at Nottingham. De Sousa, who also claimed a double at Catterick on Tuesday, struck on Style And Panache (12-1) and Kahraba (11-8 favourite) to take his seasonal tally to 151 winners.
