Goilf: Lothians ace revels in SGU win

LOTHIANS ace Zander Culverwell hopes to use his first SGU Order of Merit success to "kick on" to bigger and better things.

The 23-year-old produced a stunning performance over the weekend to win the Battle Trophy, a new 72-hole event over the Craighead course at Crail.

He shot rounds of 70, 74, 68 and 74 for a two-under-par aggregate of 286 to win by four shots from Scott Gibson of Southerness.

It was Culverwell's first victory since he was crowned as Lothians champion in 2005.

"Hopefully I can kick on from this," said the Dunbar player. "I'm part of a good set-up at Stirling University and this is just the confidence boost I was needing."

Culverwell, who beat Mark Kerr to lift the Lothians title at Dalmahoy, felt his game wasn't too far away from clicking when he missed the cut at last weekend's Craigmillar Park Open by a single shot. He didn't play as well as he was hoping to when he then travelled down to West Lancs for the British Universities' Championship but still headed home with some positive thoughts.

"I found something in the last couple of rounds and that allowed me to come here with some good thoughts," he said.

"It also helped that I love this course, having had good memories from playing it in a Scottish Universities Order of Merit event at the end of 2009."

Three ahead going into the final round, Culverwell started by three-putting the first and then dropped shots at the second, fifth and seventh holes.

He was tied for the lead with Gibson and Glenbervie's Graeme Robertson at the turn but three successive birdies edged him back in front again.

Kingsknowe's Allyn Dick, a two-time winner of the event as a 36-holer, shared 12th on 300.

• TROON WELBECK'S David Wilson recovered from being eight down to beat Liam Johnston of Dumfries & County in the final of the Scottish Boys' Championship at Dunbar.
