Glen is Colts' sharpshooter

A LATE penalty from Liam Glen capped a fine comeback from Musselburgh Windsor Colts, winning 3-2 against Cavalry Park Colts in a keenly contested South East Region under-13 Belmont Vauxhall Cup final at Saughton Enclosure.

The match began end-to-end with both teams battling for possession on a gloriously sunny evening, with Musselburgh enjoying the better chances early on.

Aaran Currie made a fantastic run through the Cavalry defence and squared to Finlay McNeil who had the ball in the net, but the referee ruled the Windsor player offside.

The decision sparked Duddington-based Cavalry into life and they were soon awarded a penalty when Dan Hanna was brought down just inside the box. The Cavalry No.?14 Jamie Strachan stepped up to the spot kick and sent keeper Lewis Buchanan the wrong way with a firmly hit strike into his right-hand corner.

Musselburgh went for an equaliser, and they were rewarded for their endeavours when McNeil made a fine run down the right-hand side. The midfielder played a tempting cross into the box for the tall Jack Landsborough to rise and nod the ball into the corner of the net.

There was a flurry of chances at either end as both teams looked to go a goal ahead before the break, and Lewis Shortell was not far away with a 20-yard strike which sailed just above the Musselburgh net. Windsor then replied with a header from Ryan Letson which was just wide as Musselburgh affirmed their aerial supremacy.

After the break, Cavalry took the lead again as Shortell latched onto a ball from Stephen Peat and finished from close range to restore the their lead a mere minute after the restart.

Musselburgh were spurred on after going behind for a second time, and were almost level again when Landsborough dribbled round three players before showing too much of the ball to Cavalry keeper Ewan Lennox who gratefully snuggled the ball in his six-yard box. Windsor went close again as Currie had a shot on the edge of the box, which was narrowly wide. The midfielder failed to spot McNeil inside the six-yard box who was poised to tap-in from close range.

Windsor did grab an equaliser soon after through a goal of real quality and worthy of any cup final. Liam Glen latched onto a pass and rifled a 25-yard strike high into the roof of the net to equalise for the Colts with 12 minutes still on the clock.

Cavalry then had the bulk of possession and Peat had a good opportunity on the edge of the box but blazed his shot over the bar. Shortell also shot high and wide. The main turning point of the game then occurred as a game of pinball within the box resulted in the referee ordering a penalty to the Windsor with only five minutes remaining. Glen stepped up and emphatically slammed the ball high to the keeper's right. Windsor held their lead with relative ease in the closing minutes to lift the Belmont Vauxhall Cup.

Musselburgh manager John Cullen praised midfielder Liam Glen's equaliser and penalty to win the game. "What a screamer. That's what Liam Glen's all about, he gets you goals when you need them."
