Glasgow’s East End could get public tennis courts

JUDY Murray’s wish for more tennis facilities in the East End of Glasgow looks set to come true as plans for four new courts have been confirmed.

Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council confirmed the public courts will be situated at Garrowhill Park and Glasgow Club Easterhouse.

The development is still in its infancy, with planning permission required before any work can take place, but this didn’t stop Judy from taking to social media to express her delight.

She tweeted: “Loks like there’s going to be some public tennis courts in the East End of Glasgow. FINALLY!! 2 sites identified. MAKES ME SOOOO HAPPY!!!!!”

The mother of tennis stars Andy and Jamie had previously expressed her disappointment with the lack of facilities available to youngsters who may wish to take up the game.

Speaking to the Evening Times last month, she said: “It’s a real shame tennis did not feature in the Commonwealth Games because it would have resulted in a much-needed outdoor hard-court tennis centre for Glasgow.

“There hasn’t been a public tennis court in Easterhouse for 30 years and the only club in the east end is in Mount Vernon which is miles away.

“Tennis Scotland and Glasgow City Council are looking for suitable places and all the public parks with tennis courts are free to play on, which is great – that’s the way it should be and makes tennis accessible to all.”
