Glasgow to host British Davis Cup clash

Great Britain's Davis Cup match against Luxembourg will take place in Glasgow, the Lawn Tennis Association announced yesterday.

The Braehead Arena will stage the match from 8-10 July, the weekend after Wimbledon, and should see Scotland's Andy Murray return to the team.

The venue staged the 2006 match against Serbia and Montenegro and the 2009 tussle with Ukraine. Britain lost both matches, but captain Leon Smith will be hoping for better fortune against Luxembourg.

Smith said: "We've seen before that Braehead is a great venue for Davis Cup tennis.

"I know we'll get fantastic support and I'm confident that a hard-court surface will suit our players well as we look to take another step towards promotion."

Smith has steered Britain to victories over minnows Turkey and Tunisia since taking over the captaincy from John Lloyd last year, keeping Britain on course for promotion back to Europe/Africa Zone Group I.

British No 1 Murray appealed for strong support, saying: "It makes such a difference to have a sell-out crowd behind you in these matches.

"I know the team will get great support and that's what Davis Cup tennis is all about. I'm looking forward to the tie and helping the team."

Other Scots in contention for places in the British team will be Andy's brother Jamie Murray, fellow doubles specialist Colin Fleming and Glasgow's Jamie Baker.
