Glasgow to complain as Leinster make late call-off

GLASGOW have complained to the Magners League after Leinster postponed last night's Magners League match despite insisting Glasgow should travel as the pitch would be playable.

The Warriors management stated officially they were left "disappointed and frustrated" following the cancellation of the game against Leinster at the Royal Dublin Society Showgrounds due to a frozen pitch. Privately, the coaching staff and players, and the SRU, were seething as they had made several checks before the squad travelled on Thursday.

The club also passed on the advice from Leinster, who had declared the pitch playable on Thursday afternoon, to supporters and a number of Glasgow fans had also made the trip across the Irish Sea. Glasgow has urged Leinster to call the game off if there were doubts, in line with moves by Ulster and Connacht who declared their pitches unplayable on Wednesday after studying the weather forecasts.

A Glasgow spokesman said: "Glasgow will now be discussing the late cancellation of the fixture with Magners League organisers, Celtic Rugby, as a priority."

Following an inspection of the RDS yesterday morning, Leinster called the game off "due to extreme and unprecedented conditions overnight and this morning", and it is highly unlikely that the Magners League will take any punitive action against Leinster.

The Irish province's chief executive Mick Dawson accepted it was a late call and said he understood Glasgow's frustration, but insisted that the conditions had deteriorated unexpectedly. He said: "Unfortunately the pitch is unplayable despite a huge amount of effort made by the RDS ground-staff over the last week to get the game played. The weather just caught us out in the end because we were confident that it could go ahead up until yesterday (Thursday] evening."

All tickets purchased for last night's game will be valid for the re-arranged fixture although no date has as yet been set.
