Glasgow misses out on hosting 2018 Youth Olympics

GLASGOW’S hopes of hosting the 2018 Youth Olympic Games ended in huge disappointment when its bid was eliminated in the first round of voting by the International Olympic Committee.

The Scottish city had been bidding against Buenos Aires in Argentina and Colombian city Medellin for the event, but attracted the fewest votes at the election in Lausanne.

Glasgow’s bid was presented by Sebastian Coe, chairman of the British Olympic Association, and multi-Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy.

Hoy said on Twitter: “Sadly it wasn’t to be. Glasgow didn’t make it to the final voting round. The team did a brilliant job, very proud to have been involved.”

Earlier, Coe had stressed to IOC members that Glasgow would be a safe choice for the Games.

He said in his presentation: “Glasgow is a safe city, a warm city, a welcoming city with an unstoppable spirit of fun.”

Buenos Aires won the IOC vote to host the 2018 Youth Olympics after defeating Medellin in the final round.
