Glasgow Hawks 37-21 Selkirk: Hawks sink battling Selkirk

SELKIRK ran into Hawks on one of their efficient, if not quite scintillating days, and it says much for the well-honed rugby skills and sheer determination of the Philliphaugh men that they limited Hawks to only five tries, and then scored two of their own.

Hawks may be a young side, which coach Peter Wright regards as a bit lightweight, but up front they looked more than a match physically for the visiting pack. With the lion's share of the ball from the set-piece, Hawks controlled the ball as they played into the stiff wind in the first half.

On the odd occasion they got the ball, Selkirk could be accused of trying to play too much rugby, and in the wrong areas of the pitch.

A Grant Strang try and five goal points from Duncan Weir for Hawks, to two Scott Hendrie penalties for Selkirk looked like being all the first half scoring, until Weir scored a great solo try from his own half.

After the break, Hawks tore the Selkirk defence apart with scorching breaks, handing Robbie Hair a hat-trick of tries.

Weir added a further seven goal points to give the home side a 37-9 lead, before Selkirk earned two lovely late tries from Jon Smyth and Fraser Harkness.
