Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games ambassadors named

Olympic gold medalists Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams have been named as the latest ambassadors for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Swimming stars Michael Jamieson and David Carry, and Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth Games athlete Allan Wells, will also be sporting ambassadors for next year’s Games.

They join Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy, swimmer Rebecca Adlington, comedian Billy Connolly and actor Martin Compston in the role.

Ennis-Hill, Adams and Jamieson will star in a poster campaign as well as a television advert narrated by Scottish actor Kevin McKidd and featuring music by DJ Calvin Harris.

It will be aired in Scotland and the North of England from next Monday as one million tickets for the Games go on sale.

Ennis-Hill, who won heptathlon gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, said she was delighted to take up the role.

‘Amazing’

“Having a major Championships in Britain so soon after the Olympics in London is brilliant and to have the support of a crowd made up of all the home nations will really help us athletes achieve our best again,” she said.

“I will never forget the roar of the crowd in London and hope that everyone goes out to buy tickets to add their support for us all once again.

“My goal is to add the Commonwealth gold medal to my Olympic, World and European ones - the full set would be amazing.”

Adams, the first woman to win an Olympic boxing gold medal, said the Games were a “huge deal” for her.

“It’s another opportunity to create history and win the first women’s Commonwealth Games boxing medal,” she said.

“Having the Games in Glasgow I know the public support will be fantastic and I’m looking forward to getting back into the ring and giving everyone something to cheer about.”

Competing

Jamieson, an Olympic and Commonwealth 200m breaststroke silver medallist, said: “Tollcross, the venue for swimming at the Games, is the pool in which I trained as a youngster and decided that I wanted to take swimming seriously.

“Swimming for me is all about competing and performing in big competitions, and they don’t come much bigger than a Commonwealth Games in your home city and home pool. I can’t wait and I’m going for gold.”

Sports fans will be able to apply for Games tickets across the 17 sports during a four-week ticketing phase that begins next Monday.

Prices start from £15 and more than two thirds of the tickets cost £25 or less.
