Gilmour and Bankier lead Scotland’s badminton team

The pair, who will play together in the women’s doubles, are among the standout names in the ten-player team named by Badminton Scotland.

Bankier, who won a World Championship silver medal in 2011 and represented Great Britain at the London Olympics two years ago, will also play alongside veteran Robert Blair in the mixed doubles.

Gilmour, the world No 18, will also be Scotland’s entrant in the women’s singles.

Blair, a former England international and a World Championship silver medallist in 2006, will also play in the men’s doubles along with Paul van Rietvelde.

Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh will be a second men’s doubles pairing while Kieran Merrilees will feature in the men’s singles.

Van Rietvelde will also play mixed doubles with Jillie Cooper.

Two other players in Caitlin Pringle and Rebekka Findlay will come in for the team competition, which will be the sixth badminton gold medal on offer at the Games.

Badminton Scotland chief executive Anne Smillie said: “I am confident that we have the right blend of youth and experience to make an impact at Glasgow 2014 in both the team and individual events, especially with a passionate home crowd behind us.”
