Frosty reaction after late call-off at Dundee High

THERE were angry rumblings at Mayfield on Saturday after a very late decision resulted in the postponement of the Dundee High fixture against Stirling County.

Scheduled to kick off at 2pm, the game was not, in fact, called off until after that time had passed. In the end, the decision was put down to a pitch that had not thawed sufficiently. Match referee Philip Davies and Stirling coach Graeme Young prevailed, albeit reluctantly, in outvoting Dundee coach Ian Rankin to cancel the encounter.

But there was a palpable sense of ire among the crowd at being sent away. Telephone callers to the Dundee clubhouse before noon had been assured the game was on.

“We are massively disappointed,” said Rankin. “The referee thought it was playable at one o’clock but has decided that he’s worried in case something happens.”

Young added: “We gave it the best opportunity we could. The reality is that player safety is paramount.”
