Fraser on Fishing: Small and dark does the trick on Kingennie trip

I paid a flying visit to the Forbes of Kingennie complex near Dundee.

Over the years, the place has turned into a thriving and diverse business but it was the fishing I was interested in.

I got a place on the Burnside pool, where some good catches had been reported.

The water was gin clear and the fish could see me as well as I could see them, so stealth was of the essence.

Small black flies were hatching so I decided to try Buzzers to begin with, a black one on the top dropper, a cruncher mid and Dennis the Menace on the point.

It took several casts before I noticed that the fish were avoiding my offerings, so I downsized my fluorocarbon to 6lb breaking strain.

This did the trick as my line suddenly took a rattle before heading out into deeper water.

I must admit I was impressed with the fight put up by the rainbow and, at 2lb-plus, it was a quality fish.

I kept on the move and found there were fish all round the pond I don't think it would have mattered what you chucked at them as long as it was small and dark.

In only a few hours I attained my limit but nothing big, although I was broken off on one occasion.

It is a smashing place to visit and there is a lovely bar and restaurant to pass away the hours with stories of the ones that did not get away.
