Fraser on Fishing: Heart-stopping moments make Butterstone a must

Big changes have been put in place at Butterstone Loch with the erection of a new fishing lodge.

However, it is the fishing that is all-important and it lives up to expectations and the increases which have been brought in certainly justify the fantastic sport that is on offer.

All the boats are fitted with electric outboards and fish bags with landing nets provided for the generous bag limits. Taking the boat out from the jetty I turned off the engine just outside the harbour where several fish were showing. It was flat calm so I tried a couple of Muddlers stripped across the surface to see what I could get. On my first cast - nothing, but thereafter big bow waves honed in on. After five minutes or so I was broken with what I believed to be a big fish. This is what fishing is all about - very visual with heart-stopping moments when a fish takes. After taking a couple by this method a slight wind picked up which was perfect for the Buzzers.

It was one of those days when you could not go wrong and I made the most of it. I must have covered all of the water close in and out in the deeps and in every area there were eager fish waiting. It was not long before I was into double figures and the fish were unbelievable - feisty with full tails. It was a wonderful session and I can guarantee it will not be long before I am back.
