Fraser on fishing: A lot of Bangour for your bucks despite the sunshine

IT may have been great for sunbathing in but the hot weather was no good for fly fishing.

However, there is always the exception to the rule and that was at Bangour fishery.

When I arrived, it was warm and sunny but fish were still showing on the surface. After the usual cavalry charge to get the prime spots, the shore in front of the lodge produced good sport. The fish were very receptive and some big fish were coming to the net.

Although a lot of fish were showing on the surface, most takes were deep and slow.

I started on the far side opposite the lodge and, for about an hour, did not even get an offer.

Moving on to the dam wall and deeper water brought my first fish. Casting across the valve tower with a yellow dancer, I hooked into a 3lb fish.

Settling into to my fishing after that, I got take after take but could not get them to stick.

However, patience paid dividends as I took three in quick succession on the same method before the wind picked up and the fish went off.

Although my four fish averaged 3lbs, I still only came fourth in my club on the day but the fishery has a great set-up and is well worth a visit.
