Frankie Dettori scores after diversion to Epsom

Saeed Bin Suroor has a hectic week with visits to Germany and America in store but he still had time to drop into Epsom yesterday to see Prince Siegfried enjoy a confidence booster in the feature ten-furlong conditions race.

The four-year-old gelding hit form at around this point last season when he was third to Debussy in a French Group 2 and won a Listed race at Ayr, but had failed to make much of an impression this term.

Dettori's popularity saw Prince Siegfried's odds contract to 4-6 favourite and under one of the Italian's typically astute front-running rides, he was a little too wise for Jet Away and kept him at bay by a length and a half. Bin Suroor's travelling will be exacerbated by the fact he is observing Ramadan and cannot eat or drink before sunset. He went on: "It's a busy week. On Saturday I'm going to Saratoga because Vineyard Haven runs in a Grade One - he should go well - and tomorrow I'm going to Baden Baden for Emerald Commander."

Darren May, one of the Tompkins & May Partnership, the building service suppliers who sponsored much of the card, had mixed emotions after the Amateur Derby as he used to own the winner Maybe I Wont. The 14-1 shot led home a one-two for Lucinda Featherstone, with Phil Collington on the winner and the trainer's son JP riding Arashi, who was half a length behind.
