Frankie Dettori lands French success on Mshawish

Mshawish yesterday provided Frankie Dettori with his first stakes winner since returning to the saddle in the Listed Prix de Tourgeville at Deauville.

The win was also significant as it was the Italian’s first notable success in his new job as retained jockey to Sheikh Joaan Al Thani.

Last seen finishing fourth in the St James’s Palace Stakes behind Dawn Approach and Toronado, the Mikel Delzangles-trained colt looked to have plenty to do entering the final furlong but eventually quickened up smartly to win going away by a neck from Market Share.

Mshawish holds an entry in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood later this month.

Mshawish will not take up that assignment and is instead likely to have his next race at home in France.

Delzangles said: “He did it well in the end. He had a little break after the St James’s Palace and it’s nice to see him win again.

“Obviously Frankie rode
him at Ascot but I don’t think it was a case of knowing him any better.

“He did nothing wrong on him at Ascot he was just beaten by some very good horses and did everything right there also.

“He’s got lots of options. He won’t go to Goodwood, we’ve taken him out of that this morning. He could go to Longchamp – there’s a Group Three at Deauville – or we may even wait until Arc day, we’ll just wait and see.

“It’s nice to win a decent race for Sheikh Joaan. The competition is very hard with him
also having horses with the
Hannons!”
