Frankel mare scanned in foal

Frankel has had his first mare scanned in foal at Juddmonte Farms’ Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket.

The mare in question is the former David Wachman-trained Chrysanthemum, a dual Group 3 winner and third in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in 2011. Frankel, who retired at the end of last season undefeated after 14 races and became the highest-rated horse in the world, has an outstanding book of mares in his first season as a stallion.

Bated Breath, also owned by Khalid Abdullah, has had his first mare tested in foal – Pretty Primo, a winning half-sister to Group 1 winner Wootton Bassett.

“Both horses are proving to be very professional and it is always good to get their first mare tested in foal,” stud general manager Philip Mitchell said.

Meanwhile, Aidan O’Brien has issued an upbeat bulletin on his dual Derby winner Camelot, who has recovered well from a serious bout of colic.

Having won the 2000 Guineas as well as the Classics at Epsom and the Curragh, he was sent off a short price to complete the Triple Crown in the St Leger but came off second best to Encke. He then trailed home in seventh in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe under Frankie Dettori but remains in training as a four-year-old. O’Brien said: “He’s in full work. We’re delighted with him really, he’s made a good recovery. He’s half-speeding away and it’s so far so good.”

Elsewhere Nina Carberry, one of Ireland’s leading amateur riders, could have her first runner as a trainer at Gowran Park on Saturday with Peak Raider. Carberry is one of several from her family involved in the sport and Peak Raider used to be trained by her legendary father, Tommy, who rode Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National winners.

Her brothers, Paul and Philip, are jockeys and Nina herself has had great success in that sphere. She won the 2011 Irish Grand National on Organised- confusion, trained by her uncle, Arthur Moore, and has been victorious at the Cheltenham Festival four times. She tweeted: “Delighted to have my first entry as trainer in Gowran Park this Saturday. Hope he runs well.”

At Southwell yesterday, Steve Gollings revealed he will consider Ayr’s Scottish National meeting for Conquisto after the promising novice chaser made it two wins from four starts over fences. The eight-year-old had been put in his place by leading Arkle Trophy fancy Overturn at Doncaster and was then beaten on heavy ground at Kelso after making a successful debut over bigger obstacles.

However, Conquisto (1-2 fav) got back to winning ways when making most of the running in the 32Red Novices’ Chase. Travelling kindly for Tom Scudamore, he shrugged aside his main challenger Jack The Gent to score by four-and-a-half lengths. “That was a relief. Last time at Kelso the testing ground found him out, but the ground suited him,” said Gollings. “He’s going the right way. Aintree probably would come into the equation and possibly Ayr. Speaking to Tom, he thought he might go well there. Plans are fluid.”
