Foreign round-up: Dutch leaders PSV rout Feyenoord with 10-0 win

Dutch leaders PSV Eindhoven inflicted the heaviest ever defeat on former European champions Feyenoord with a 10-0 drubbing at the Philips stadium yesterday.

Brazilian Jonathan Reis hit a hat-trick with Ibrahim Afellay, Ola Toivonen, Jeremain Lens (2), Balazs Dzsudzsak (2) and Orlando Engelaar joining in the rout.

Feyenoord, traditionally one of the 'big three' clubs in the Netherlands and European Cup winners in 1970, were reduced to ten men on 34 minutes when midfielder Kelvin Leerdam was sent off.

Their previous worst defeat was an 8-2 loss to Ajax Amsterdam on 18 September, 1983.

"This really hurts, suffering a defeat like this and it was very emotional in the dressing room afterwards," Feyenoord coach Mario Been told reporters.

"It is hard to realise what happened," added left-back Tim de Cler. "After the first goal and the red card everyone just played their own match and we totally collapsed."

PSV remain top of the table with 24 points after ten matches, two more then champions Twente Enschede who beat visitors AD Den Haag 3-2. Feyenoord are 16th in the league of 18 with eight points.

Ajax Amsterdam slipped to third with 21 points after a 2-2 draw at Excelsior Rotterdam, who took a 2-0 lead after Ajax's Vurnon Anita was sent off. Second-half goals from Mounir El Hamdaoui and Jan Vertonghen salvaged a point for Ajax.

In Germany, meanwhile, Mainz moved back to the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a 1-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen.

Substitute Andreas Ivanschitz scored the 70th-minute winner two minutes after coming off the bench to earn Mainz their eighth win in nine games this season and send them two points clear of Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund needed a free-kick three minutes into injury time from Antonio da Silva to snatch a 1-1 draw at home to Hoffenheim as their seven-game winning streak came to an end. Demba Ba put Hoffenheim ahead in the ninth minute before Dortmund were denied an equaliser six minutes later when Nuri Sahin was ordered to re-take a penalty and he missed at the second attempt. The visitors had Sejad Salihovic sent off just seconds after the final whistle.

Stuttgart moved off the foot of the table with a 2-0 win at home to St Pauli. Georg Niedermaier put Jens Keller's side ahead in the 19th minute and Zdravko Kuzmanovic made the points safe 15 minutes from time. Stuttgart's win saw Cologne, who yesterday sacked manager Zvonimir Soldo, slip to the foot of the standings.

In France, Olympique Lyon failed to boost coach Claude Puel's hopes of keeping his job after they drew 1-1 at bottom club Arles-Avignon in Ligue 1.

Jimmy Briand cancelled out Franck Dja Djedje's opener but the draw will do little to help Puel's cause.Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is set to assess Puel's position at the end of the month with the club, French champions from 2002-08, struggling to make an impact in Ligue 1 despite taking maximum points from three Champions League games.

Lyon are 14th in the standings with 12 points from ten games, seven points behind leaders Stade Rennes.

Paris St Germain, in sixth, missed the chance to make up ground after slumping to a 3-2 home defeat against AJ Auxerre.
