Hibernian Ladies broke open the bubbly after cementing a wonderful year for the Easter Road club by adding the SSE Scottish Women's Cup to the League Cup they won earlier in the season.

The win also means that, for the first time ever, the same club holds both the women’s and men’s Scottish Cups.

The final against Glasgow City at Hamilton’s Superseal Stadium ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and again after extra time. Ironically, the two scorers, Lisa Robertson and Hayley Lauder, both failed to convert their spot-kicks.

The other 11 were put away before young City substitute Sam Kerr missed the 14th to leave Hibs as the 6-5 winners.

The Edinburgh club’s head coach, Chris Roberts, said: “It’s fantastic. The reward for me is watching the celebrations and seeing how much it means to the players.

“The save by our goalkeeper, Jenna Fife, from Hayley Lauder was huge for us.”

Glasgow City ended the season with just the one trophy out of three and head coach Scott Booth said: “We weren’t really at it in the first half. I felt we had the momentum after the equaliser, but with one thing and another it didn’t quite work out.”

There was little between the teams before Robertson headed Hibs ahead midway through the first half. Both had created near identical chances with low crosses from the left, but they were cut out before Lucy Graham and Lauder were able to get the final touches.

The game already needed a goal to change the dynamic when Robertson provided it. Right-back Clare Williamson sent over a high cross and the experienced midfielder was perfectly placed to head the ball past Gemma Fay.

City, who could have no complaints about being behind at half time, brought on Sarah Crilly for midfielder Haley Rosen at the start of the second. It gave them some impetus, with Fiona Brown creating a couple of half chances for Clare Shine, but the equaliser came midway through the half when Hibs could easily have been further ahead following good efforts by Graham, Murray and Hunter.

City needed one of their experienced players to step up to the plate and Lauder obliged midway through the half. The Scotland midfielder won the ball in the box and sent in a shot which Fife couldn’t stop going into the net.
